Speech says ဒါပေမယ့် and ဒါကြောင့် for the same two jobs.

How It Works

These two words open a sentence and tie it to the sentence before.

Both are built from written words. သို့ means "like that" and ထို means "that", so သို့သော် reads as "even so" and ထို့ကြောင့် as "because of that".

Use သို့သော် when the second sentence goes against what the first one leads you to expect: ဈေးကြီးသည်။ သို့သော် အစားအသောက် ကောင်းသည်။ (It is expensive. However, the food is good.)

Use ထို့ကြောင့် when the second sentence is the result of the first: နေမကောင်းပါ။ ထို့ကြောင့် အစည်းအဝေးသို့ မတက်ရောက်နိုင်ပါ။ (She is unwell. So she cannot attend the meeting.)

Inside one sentence, writing uses သော်လည်း for "although" and သောကြောင့် for "because". The two sentence-openers here do the same jobs across a full stop.

You will also meet ထို့နောက် (after that) and ထို့ပြင် (besides) at the start of written sentences. They follow the same pattern.

Each of the two sentences keeps its own written ending and its own ။.

  1. ဤစားသောက်ဆိုင်သည် ဈေးကြီးသည်။ သို့သော် အစားအသောက် ကောင်းသည်။

    This restaurant is expensive. However, the food is good.

    သို့သော် opens the second sentence with a contrast.

  2. လမ်းပေါ်တွင် ရေကြီးနေသည်။ ထို့ကြောင့် ကားများ ဖြည်းညှင်းစွာ မောင်းနှင်ကြသည်။

    The road is flooded. So the cars are driving slowly.

    ထို့ကြောင့် opens the sentence that gives the result.

  3. ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် နေမကောင်းပါ။ ထို့ကြောင့် အစည်းအဝေးသို့ မတက်ရောက်နိုင်ပါ။

    Daw Khin Khin is unwell. So she cannot attend the meeting.

    Being unwell leads to the result after ထို့ကြောင့်.

  4. ကျောင်းသားများ အချိန်မီ ရောက်ကြသည်။ သို့သော် ဆရာ မရောက်သေးပါ။

    The students arrived on time. However, the teacher has not arrived yet.

    The second sentence after သို့သော် is the unexpected part.

  5. မိုးသည်းထန်စွာ ရွာမည်ဟု ခန့်မှန်းထားသည်။ ထို့ကြောင့် ပွဲကို ရွှေ့လိုက်သည်။

    Heavy rain is forecast. So the event has been postponed.

    ထို့ကြောင့် links the forecast to the decision.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting a written sentence with the spoken ဒါပေမယ့်.

    ဈေးကြီးသည်။ ဒါပေမယ့် အစားအသောက် ကောင်းသည်။
    ဈေးကြီးသည်။ သို့သော် အစားအသောက် ကောင်းသည်။

    A text written with သည် uses the written opener သို့သော်.
