ပြီး
Actions in Sequence
Only the last verb takes an ending, and the whole sentence takes its time from it.
How It Works
ပြီး is the verb "finish". After another verb, it means "after doing this", and the sentence goes on to the next action.
| First action + ပြီး | Next action |
|---|---|
| ရေချိုးပြီး | အိပ်မယ်။ I'll shower and go to bed. |
| ရုံးဆင်းပြီး | ဈေးသွားမယ်။ After work, I'll go to the market. |
| ဈေးသွားပြီး | လက်ဆောင် ဝယ်တယ်။ I went to the market and bought presents. |
Only the last verb gets an ending. The first action takes its time from that ending, so a sentence with မယ် is a plan for both actions.
ပြီး also joins two describing words, like "and": ဒီဟော်တယ်က သန့်ရှင်းပြီး ဈေးချိုတယ်။ (This hotel is clean and cheap.)
Two other forms come from the same word. ပြီးပြီ ends a sentence and means "already done": စားပြီးပြီ။ (I've eaten.) ပြီးတော့ starts a new sentence with "and then".
In writing, ၍ does the same job.
