သောကြောင့်
Because in Writing
After a noun, add ဖြစ် first: ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် means "because it is a holiday".
How It Works
သောကြောင့် means "because" in writing. The reason always comes first, and the result comes second: မိုးရွာသောကြောင့် ကျောင်းပိတ်သည်။ (The school closed because it rained.)

English can put "because" at the end of a sentence. Written Burmese cannot. Start with the reason and end with the result.
When the reason is a noun, add the verb ဖြစ် (to be) before သောကြောင့်: ထိုနေ့သည် ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် ဘဏ်များ ဖွင့်မည်မဟုတ်ပါ။ (Because that day is a holiday, the banks will not open.) For a plain noun cause, such as "because of the rain", write the noun with ကြောင့်: မိုးကြောင့်.
News reports often use သဖြင့် in the same place. It means the same thing and sounds more like a report. To start a new sentence with "so", writing uses ထို့ကြောင့်.
Keep every part of the sentence written. လို့ and spoken endings such as တယ် do not go with သောကြောင့်.
When you read, find သောကြောင့် first: everything before it is the reason.

နေမကောင်းသောကြောင့် gives the reason, and the result is negative.
- လမ်းပိတ်နေသောကြောင့် ဘတ်စ်ကားများ နောက်ကျသည်။
The buses are late because the road is blocked.
The ongoing verb ပိတ်နေ takes သောကြောင့် directly.
- ဈေးနှုန်း သက်သာသောကြောင့် လူများစွာ ဤဆိုင်တွင် ဝယ်ယူကြသည်။
Many people shop at this store because the prices are low.
သက်သာသောကြောင့် explains why people shop there.
- ထိုနေ့သည် ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် ဘဏ်များ ဖွင့်မည်မဟုတ်ပါ။
Because that day is a public holiday, the banks will not open.
The noun ရုံးပိတ်ရက် needs ဖြစ် before သောကြောင့်.
Common Mistakes
Putting the reason after the result, as in English.
ကျောင်းပိတ်သည် မိုးရွာသောကြောင့်။မိုးရွာသောကြောင့် ကျောင်းပိတ်သည်။The reason with သောကြောင့် comes first, and the sentence ends with the result.
Putting သောကြောင့် straight after a noun.
ရုံးပိတ်ရက်သောကြောင့် ဘဏ်များ ပိတ်သည်။ရုံးပိတ်ရက် ဖြစ်သောကြောင့် ဘဏ်များ ပိတ်သည်။သောကြောင့် follows a verb, so a noun takes ဖြစ် first.
