Simple Past Verb Endings

Level 3Sounds Like karailōm̐ / karailā / karailē

The past tense: মই শুলোঁ “I slept”, তুমি জিকিলা “you won”, তাই শুলে “she slept”.

How It Works

One set of endings makes the simple past.

WhoEndingকৰ “do”জিক “win”
মই, আমি-িলোঁকৰিলোঁজিকিলোঁ
তুমি-িলাকৰিলাজিকিলা
আপুনি, তেওঁ, সি, তাই-িলেকৰিলেজিকিলে

Examples: আমি কাম কৰিলোঁ “we worked”, তুমি জিকিলা “you won” and আপুনি কি কৰিলে? “what did you do?”.

The past of the verbs যা “go” and হ “become” is irregular, and other topics show it. Some third-person forms end in -ল instead of -লে, and both are heard.

The negative past puts ন- before the verb, as in নকৰিলোঁ “I did not do”.

Examples (5)

  1. মই শুলোঁ।

    I slept.

শু ends in a vowel, so the ending for মই is -লোঁ, with no ি.

  2. তুমি জিকিলা।

    You won.

    -িলা goes with তুমি.

  3. তাই শুলে।

    She slept.

শু ends in a vowel, so the ending for তাই is -লে.

  4. আমি কাম কৰিলোঁ।

    We worked.

আমি takes -িলোঁ, as মই does.

  5. আপুনি কি কৰিলে?

    What did you do?

    আপুনি takes -িলে.
