Not Doing in the Past

Level 3Sounds Like nakarailōm̐ / nakarailā / nakarailē

ময়ো লক্ষ্য নকৰিলোঁ “I did not notice it either”, and ৰফিকুলে নুবুজিলে “Rafiqul did not understand”.

How It Works

The negative past keeps the person endings of the positive past: -োঁ for মই and আমি, -া for তুমি, and -ে for আপুনি, সি, তাই and তেওঁ. The few verbs whose past ends in -ল keep it, as in নহ’ল “did not become”.

PositiveNegativeMeaning
কৰিলোঁনকৰিলোঁI did not do it
বুজিলেনুবুজিলেhe did not understand
দিলেনিদিলেshe did not give
দেখিলোঁনেদেখিলোঁI did not see
পালোঁনাপালোঁI did not get

Some speakers say নে- instead of না-, as in নেখাওঁ. That form is not a mistake, and this course writes না-. Later you will see that নকৰিলে can also mean “if you do not do it”.

Examples (5)

  1. ময়ো লক্ষ্য নকৰিলোঁ।

I did not notice it either.

    ন- stays attached to কৰিলোঁ.

  2. ৰফিকুলে নুবুজিলে।

    Rafiqul did not understand.

The vowel after ন becomes উ to copy বুজিলে.

  3. তোমাক কোনেও লক্ষ্য নকৰিলে।

    Nobody noticed you.

A word like কোনেও “nobody” goes with a negative verb.

  4. কাজিৰঙাত মই গঁড় দেখিলোঁ, কিন্তু বাঘ নেদেখিলোঁ।

In Kaziranga I saw a rhino, but I did not see a tiger.

    নেদেখিলোঁ has এ after ন, like দেখিলোঁ.

  5. তুমি মোক কিয় নক’লা?

Why did you not tell me?

    নক’লা is the তুমি form. A verb with ক’ keeps a plain ন.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong vowel after ন-.

    ৰফিকুলে নবুজিলে।
    ৰফিকুলে নুবুজিলে।

The vowel after ন copies the first vowel of the verb, so বুজিলে gives নুবুজিলে.
