How It Works

Timeতইতুমি
Presentকৰকৰা
Pastকৰিলিকৰিলা
Futureকৰিবিকৰিবা

A stem that ends in a vowel adds -ৱ in the present: খা gives খাৱ, as in তই দিনটোত কিমান পানী খাৱ? “how much water do you drink in a day?”. A consonant stem stays as it is: তই কেনে আছ?.

For “do not”, put ন- in front of the future form: তালৈ নাযাবি! “do not go there!”. The negative present is তই নাজান “you do not know”.

Every ending here differs from the তুমি ending, so the verb alone shows that the speaker uses তই. Learners meet it in dialogue and use it only with a child or a very close friend.

Examples (5)

  1. তই কেনে আছ?

    How are you?

আছ is the stem আছ with no ending.

  2. তই দিনটোত কিমান পানী খাৱ?

How much water do you drink in a day?

After the vowel stem খা, the present adds -ৱ.

  3. তই জিকিলি!

    You won!

    The past ends in -িলি.

  4. তই অকলে কি কৰিবি?

What will you do on your own?

    The future ends in -িবি.

  5. তালৈ নাযাবি!

    Do not go there!

ন- before the future form means “do not”.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the তুমি ending with তই.

    তই কেনে আছা?
    তই কেনে আছ?

After তই the present is the bare stem আছ, not the তুমি form আছা.
