If or When: The -লে Ending

Level 5Sounds Like karailē / ga’lē / ha’lē

বৰষুণ দিলে মই নাযাওঁ means “if it rains, I will not go”.

How It Works

The -লে form names the condition, and the main verb names the result. The form does not change for the doer.

VerbConditionMeans
দি “give”দিলেif or when it gives
যা “go”গ’লেif or when it goes
হ “be”হ’লেif or when it is
থাক “stay”থাকিলেif or when it stays

Watch for the same ending in the past. ভাস্কৰে গামোচাখন লাহে লাহে ধুলে “Bhaskar washed the gamosa slowly” is a plain past sentence, with no result clause. The conditional needs a result clause after it, or a time sense such as “whenever”: শীত পৰিলে মই গৰম চাহ খাওঁ “I drink hot tea when it gets cold”.

-লেই adds stress: নদীৰ পাৰলৈ দহ মিনিট খোজ কাঢ়ি গ’লেই নামঘৰটো দেখা পোৱা যায় “walk ten minutes towards the riverbank and you can see the namghar”. For a negative condition, use the negative stem with -লে, or the word নহ’লে.
