-gani bilan

Although: -gani Bilan

Level 5

-gani bilan means although or even though: Yosh boʻlgani bilan, juda aqlli (Although he is young, he is very smart).

How It Works

1. Building it
verb + -gan + possessive + bilan:

  • oʻqiganim bilan (although I studied)
  • oʻqiganing bilan (although you studied)
  • oʻqigani bilan (although he or she studied)
  • oʻqiganimiz bilan (although we studied)
  • oʻqiganingiz bilan (although you studied, polite)
  • oʻqiganlari bilan (although they studied)

In sayings about no one in particular, you may hear it with no possessive: Gapirgan bilan foydasi yoʻq (There's no use talking).

With a noun or adjective, add boʻlmoq: Uy kichik boʻlgani bilan, juda qulay (Although the house is small, it's very comfortable).

2. A real fact
-gani bilan talks about something that is true. For a condition that may or may not happen (even if), use -sa ham: Yomgʻir yogʻsa ham, boraman (I'll go even if it rains).

3. Tense
The -gan here does not always mean past. Rus tilini tushunganim bilan, yaxshi gapira olmayman means Although I understand Russian, I can't speak it well. The main verb sets the time.

4. Watch out for look-alikes

  • -ishi bilan uses the -ish form and means as soon as.
  • bilan can also mean with: uning qilgani bilan ishim yoʻq (I have nothing to do with what he did). The although meaning needs a second clause that goes against the first.

Similar words for although or despite are garchi ... -sa ham and -ga qaramay.
