-ga qaramay
Despite
-ga qaramay means despite. The obstacle takes -ga: Yomgʻirga qaramay, oʻyin davom etdi (Despite the rain, the game went on).
How It Works
Qaramay is the negative form of qaramoq (to look) with -may, so yomgʻirga qaramay is literally not looking at the rain. It works like English despite or in spite of.
With a noun. Put the noun in the -ga case: yomgʻirga qaramay (despite the rain), yoshiga qaramay (despite his age).
With a whole situation. Uzbek does not put a finished sentence before qaramay. Turn the verb into a participle used as a noun or a verb noun, add the possessive ending, then -ga:
- charchaganiga qaramay (despite being tired)
- kech boʻlishiga qaramay (despite it being late)
Nevertheless. Shunga qaramay means even so or nevertheless and starts the second sentence.
A longer form. -ga qaramasdan means the same and is common in writing: ogohlantirishlarga qaramasdan (despite the warnings).
In everyday speech, a sentence with -sa ham or lekin often carries the same idea: Yomgʻir yogʻdi, lekin oʻyin davom etdi.

Common Mistakes
Leaving out the -ga ending.
Yomgʻir qaramay, oʻyin davom etdi.Yomgʻirga qaramay, oʻyin davom etdi.Qaramay needs the -ga case, just like qaramoq (to look at) does.
Putting a finished verb before qaramay.
U charchadi qaramay, ishni tugatdi.U charchaganiga qaramay, ishni tugatdi.A past-tense verb such as charchadi cannot connect to qaramay. Use -gan or -ish with a possessive ending and -ga: charchaganiga.
Using -ga qarab instead of -ga qaramay (meant: despite the rain).
Yomgʻirga qarab, oʻyin davom etdi.Yomgʻirga qaramay, oʻyin davom etdi.-ga qarab means looking at or depending on, so the sentence loses the idea of despite. The negative qaramay means not paying attention to.
