Aspect in Negative Commands
In negative commands, the choice of aspect changes the meaning: Imperfective = 'Don't do it' (Prohibition); Perfective = 'Be careful not to' (Warning).
How It Works
When you want to tell someone not to do something in Ukrainian, the aspect of the verb you choose is critical for the pragmatic tone:
- Imperfective Aspect (Недоконаний вид): This is the standard form for prohibitions. Use it when you want to forbid an action entirely, stop someone from doing something they are currently doing, or give general advice. It focuses on the action itself. Even if the action is a one-time event, the imperfective is usually the polite and standard choice.
- Perfective Aspect (Доконаний вид): This is used specifically for warnings (застереження). It implies 'don't let this happen' or 'be careful not to.' It is most common with verbs involving accidents, forgetting, or losing things.
Morphology Note: The command is formed using the particle не followed by the imperative form of the verb. Remember that the imperative stem is derived from the present or future stem, not the infinitive.
Examples (5)
- Не відчиняй вікно, будь ласка.
Don't open the window, please.
Word by Word: Not open window, please.
Uses the imperfective 'відчиняй' because this is a standard prohibition/request not to perform the action.
- Не забудь ключі на столі!
Don't forget the keys on the table!
Word by Word: Not forget keys on table!
Uses the perfective 'забудь' as a warning against an accidental result (forgetting).
- Обережно, не впади!
Careful, don't fall!
Word by Word: Carefully, not fall!
The perfective 'впади' is used here because it is a warning against a specific, undesirable accident.
- Не купуй це м'ясо, воно не свіже.
Don't buy this meat; it's not fresh.
Word by Word: Not buy this meat, it not fresh.
Imperfective 'купуй' is used for advice or a general prohibition against the act of buying.
- Дивись, не загуби гроші.
Look out, don't lose the money.
Word by Word: Look, not lose money.
Perfective 'загуби' functions as a warning to be careful with the money.
Common Mistakes
Using the perfective for a simple one-time prohibition.
Different MeaningНе закрий двері.Не закривай двері.Learners often think 'one time = perfective.' Не закрий двері is a correct sentence, but it works as a warning ('Don't close the door by accident'). For a plain 'Don't close the door', use Не закривай двері.
Using the infinitive instead of the imperative for standard commands.
Не курити тут.Не кури тут.The infinitive (Не курити) is a blunt, categorical order. It is used on signs (No Smoking), but it sounds like a sign or a sharp command when you speak to someone directly. Use the imperative кури instead.
How It Connects

To learn the use of aspect in negative commands, a learner must first know how to form a basic negative imperative. Additionally, they need a solid grasp of the semantic difference between perfective and imperfective aspects, as this distinction determines whether a command is a general prohibition or a specific warning.
