-ува-/-юва-
Imperfective Suffixes -ува- and -юва-
In Ukrainian, adding a prefix to a verb usually makes it perfective (result-oriented). To turn that specific prefixed verb back into an imperfective form (process-oriented), we use the suffixes -ува- or -юва-. This is called secondary imperfectivization.
How It Works
Secondary imperfectivization is a vital part of the Ukrainian aspectual system. It allows speakers to maintain the specific meaning added by a prefix while shifting the focus from the result to the process.
1. Morphological Rules:
- -ува-: Attached after hard consonants. Example: викон-а-ти (to fulfill, perf.) → викон-ува-ти (to fulfill, imperf.).
- -юва-: Used when the suffix triggers softening of the preceding consonant or follows a vowel. Example: поясн-и-ти (to explain, perf.) → поясн-юва-ти (to explain, imperf.); засво-ї-ти (to internalize, perf.) → засво-юва-ти (to internalize, imperf.).
- -овува-: If the perfective verb already ends in -увати, the imperfective is formed by expanding the suffix to -овувати. Example: застосувати (to apply, perf.) → застосовувати (to apply, imperf.).
2. Consonant Changes (2nd Conjugation Verbs):
When forming the imperfective from 2nd conjugation verbs (ending in -ити), specific consonant mutations occur before the suffix:
- L-epenthesis: If the perfective stem ends in a labial consonant (б, п, в, м, ф), the letter л is inserted, followed by the soft -юва- suffix. Example: встановити → встановлювати; відновити → відновлювати. (Note: Labial stems of other conjugations do not insert 'л' and take the hard -ува-, e.g., приховати → приховувати).
- Mutations: Other consonants mutate (e.g., д → дж, з → ж, т → ч, с → ш). Example: засадити → засаджувати; запросити → запрошувати.
3. Stress and Vowel Alternation:
The stress in these verbs often remains on the root vowel (e.g., вико́нувати, засво́ювати, відно́влювати), though in some verbs it falls on the suffix. For verbs taking the expanded -овува- suffix, the stress almost always falls on the -о- (e.g., застосо́вувати, організо́вувати). While the root vowel 'o' does not change to 'a' (e.g., виконати → виконувати, not *виканувати), Ukrainian has a very common vowel alternation where 'о' and 'е' frequently change to 'і' before -ува-/-юва- when the stress falls on the root vowel (e.g., викоренити → викорінювати, виполоскати → виполіскувати).
4. Usage and Borrowed Verbs:
These verbs are used in the imperfective aspect for ongoing processes or habitual actions. Note that many borrowed verbs ending in -увати (like організувати or гарантувати) are biaspectual, meaning they can function as both perfective and imperfective depending on the context. When a strictly imperfective form is needed, these verbs often expand to the -овува- suffix (e.g., організувати [perf./imperf.] → організовувати [strictly imperf.]).
Examples (5)
- Він щодня виконує свої обов'язки.
He fulfills his duties every day.
Word by Word: He every-day fulfills his duties.
Uses the secondary imperfective 'виконувати' to show a habitual, repeated action.
- Я саме записував твою адресу, коли задзвонив телефон.
I was just writing down your address when the phone rang.
Word by Word: I just was-writing-down your address, when rang phone.
Uses the past tense of 'записувати' to describe an ongoing process interrupted by another event.
- Вчителька довго пояснювала нове правило.
The teacher was explaining the new rule for a long time.
Word by Word: Teacher long-time was-explaining new rule.
The suffix -юва- in 'пояснювати' emphasizes the duration of the explanation.
- Ми зараз обговорюємо цей проєкт.
We are discussing this project right now.
Word by Word: We now are-discussing this project.
The verb 'обговорювати' (from 'обговорити') is used here for a current, ongoing discussion.
- Уряд встановлює нові правила для бізнесу.
The government is establishing new rules for business.
Word by Word: Government establishes new rules for business.
Demonstrates 'L' epenthesis: the labial 'в' in 'встановити' triggers the insertion of 'л' before the suffix: 'встановлювати'.
Common Mistakes
Using the perfective for what you are doing right now.
Different MeaningЯ виконаю це завдання зараз.Я виконую це завдання зараз.'Я виконаю це завдання зараз' is correct, but it means 'I will do this task now'. The 'present' form of a perfective verb works as a future. To say you are doing something right now, use the imperfective with -ува-/-юва-.
Failing to truncate the perfective theme vowel before adding the suffix.
записаюватизаписуватиThe perfective theme vowel (like -а- in записати) must be removed before adding -увати. The stem is 'запис-', not 'записа-'.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the suffixes -ува- and -юва-, learners must first grasp the fundamental distinction between perfective and imperfective aspects in Ukrainian. Additionally, familiarity with how prefixes create perfective verbs is essential, as these suffixes are the primary tool for creating a corresponding imperfective partner from those prefixed forms.
