Conditional

Level 4

Take the future stem and add the endings -iái, -iás, -iá, -iam, -iatz, -ián.

How It Works

ieuparlariáivendriáiseriái

vosautresparlariatzvendriatzseriatz
eles, elasparlariánvendriánserián

The endings are the endings of the imperfect of -re and -ir verbs (vendiái, vendiás, vendiá). So the conditional is the future stem with imperfect endings.

The accent matters: parlariá and serián need the acute accent on the a. Without it, the form is a spelling mistake.

The conditional also appears in polite requests, and with a se clause for unreal conditions. Each has its own entry.

Examples (5)

  1. Parlariái mai.

    I would speak more.

Parlariái is the infinitive parlar plus -iái.

  2. Aquò seriá bon.

    That would be good.

Seriá is the conditional of èsser.

  3. Poiriam venir deman.

    We could come tomorrow.

Poiriam uses the future stem poir-.

  4. Maria vendriá l'ostal, mas Joan vòl pas.

Maria would sell the house, but Joan does not want to.

Vendriá is the el form, with the -re verb stem vendr-.

  5. Los dròlles serián contents.

    The children would be happy.

Serián is the eles form of èsser.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the ending without the accent, as in Catalan.

    Parlaria mai.
    Parlariái mai.

The ieu form ends in -iái, and the third person ends in -iá. Both carry an acute accent.
