Present of aver
Aver means to have and has six irregular forms.
How It Works
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ieu | ai | Ai dos libres. |
| tu | as | As una sòrre? |
| el, ela | a | Maria a un gat. |
| nosautres | avèm | Avèm una taula granda. |
| vosautres, vos | avètz | Avètz un libre? |
| eles, elas | an | An una sòrre. |
Put the thing you have after the verb. The verb does not change for one or many things: Ai un libre and Ai dos libres. Mind the accents in avèm and avètz. The form a (he or she has) is spelled like the preposition a (to, at); the rest of the sentence shows which one it is.
Occitan uses aver where English uses "to be" for age (Ai vint ans) and for hunger or cold (Ai fam). Later, aver also helps build the compound past.
