Future of Regular Verbs

Level 4

Take the infinitive and add -ai, -às, -à, -em, -etz, -àn. A -re verb loses its final e first.

The stem vowel does not open in the future, because the stress falls on the ending: trobarai, not tròbarai.

The accent matters. Without the grave accent, parlaras and parlara are spelling mistakes.

For a plan that is close, the near future is also common: vau parlar (I am going to speak). It has its own entry.

Èsser and aver have their own stems (serai, aurai), and a few other verbs change the stem too. The next entries show them.

Examples (5)

  1. Parlarai deman amb Joan.

I will speak with Joan tomorrow.

Parlarai is the infinitive parlar plus -ai.

  2. Vendrem l'ostal.

    We will sell the house.

    Vendre loses its e: vendrem.

  3. Finiràs lo trabalh abans lo ser.

You will finish the work before the evening.

Finiràs keeps the whole infinitive, and the grave accent marks the stress.

  4. Los dròlles jogaràn dins lo pargue.

The children will play in the park.

Jogaràn is the eles form, with the grave accent.

  5. Maria trobarà la clau.

    Maria will find the key.

Trobarà keeps a plain o, because the stress is on the ending.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the grave accent.

    Parlaras deman.
    Parlaràs deman.

The ending -às carries a grave accent.

  • Keeping the e of a -re verb.

    Vendrerem l'ostal.
    Vendrem l'ostal.

A -re verb drops its final e before the ending.

The regular future is the infinitive plus new endings, and it says in one word what vau plus an infinitive says in two, so the near future comes first.
