Present of -ar Verbs
Regular -ar verbs take the same six endings.
How It Works
| Person | parlar | cantar |
|---|---|---|
| ieu | parli | canti |
| tu | parlas | cantas |
| el, ela | parla | canta |
| nosautres | parlam | cantam |
| vosautres, vos | parlatz | cantatz |
| eles, elas | parlan | cantan |
The -i of the first person is typical of Languedocien. Spanish and Catalan end in -o, and Provençal ends in -e, so check yourself on parli.
The present covers "I speak" and "I am speaking": Parli occitan. Because the ending shows the person, the pronoun is usually left out.
A few -ar verbs change their stem vowel or spelling (demòri but demoram, mangi but manjam). The endings stay the same.
Examples (5)
- Canti a l'ostal.
I sing at home.
Cantar takes -i for I.
- Parlas plan.

- Maria manja aicí.
Maria eats here.

Common Mistakes
