Present of voler

Level 2

Voler (to want) is irregular in the present: vòli, vòles, vòl, volèm, volètz, vòlon.

How It Works

Voler means to want. Its stressed forms have an open ò, and the third person is the bare stem vòl.

vosautresvolètz

For tu, vòles and vòls are both correct. Vòls is more frequent in print. This course uses vòles.

Use voler with a noun (Vòli un tè) or with an infinitive and no word between them (Volèm partir).

The polite way to ask for something is volriái (I would like), which has its own entry.

Examples (5)

  1. Vòli un tè.

    I want a tea.

Vòli: ò in the stressed form.

  2. Vòles un cafè?

    Do you want a coffee?

    Vòles: the tu form.

  3. Maria vòl pas manjar aicí.

Maria does not want to eat here.

Vòl: no ending in the third person.

  4. Volètz venir amb nosautres?

Do you want to come with us?

Volètz: plain o, stress on the ending.

  5. Los dròlles vòlon jogar.

    The children want to play.

    Vòlon: the plural.

Common Mistakes

  • Open vowel in nosautres

    Vòlem partir.
    Volèm partir.

In nosautres the stress moves to the ending, so the o is plain and the ending takes the accent.
