Present of -re Verbs

Level 2

Verbs in -re take the endings -i, -es, nothing, -èm, -ètz and -on in the present.

How It Works

Verbs in -re have a short third person singular: it is the stem alone, with no ending.

Whovendremetre
ieuvendimeti
tuvendesmetes
el, elavendmet
nosautresvendèmmetèm
vosautresvendètzmetètz
eles, elasvendonmeton

The stress falls on the ending in nosautres and vosautres: vendèm, vendètz. The stems of vendre and metre keep their spelling in every form.

Other regular verbs of this group: respondre (respondi, respondes, respond) and rendre (rendi, rendes, rend).

A few verbs in -re also change their stem vowel, such as pèrdre: pèrdi but perdèm. That change has its own entry.

Examples (4)

  1. Vendi lo vin.

    I sell the wine.

    Vendi: stem plus -i.

  2. Metèm lo cafè sus la taula.

We put the coffee on the table.

Metèm: the stress is on the ending.

  3. Maria respond a Joan.

    Maria answers Joan.

Respond: the third person has no ending.

  4. Rendi lo libre a Joan.

I give the book back to Joan.

    Rendi: another regular -re verb.

Common Mistakes
