Present of anar
Anar means to go and has six irregular forms.
How It Works
| Person | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ieu | vau | Vau a Nimes. |
| tu | vas | Vas al mercat? |
| el, ela | va | Maria va a l'escòla. |
| nosautres | anam | Anam al pargue. |
| vosautres, vos | anatz | Anatz a Albi? |
| eles, elas | van | Van a l'ostal. |
Add the destination after the verb. Use a before a city: Vau a Nimes. Before a common noun, a joins the article: al mercat (a + lo), a la plaça, a l'escòla. The destination never changes the form of anar.
Because vau, vas, va and van look so different from anar, learn them as a set. Va is also the word in the greeting Cossí va? Later, anar plus an infinitive says what you are going to do (Vau manjar.).
Examples (4)
- Vau a Nimes.
I am going to Nîmes.
Vau is the I form.
- Vas al mercat?
Are you going to the market?
Al is a + lo.
- Anam al pargue.
We are going to the park.
Anam keeps the an- stem.
- Van a l'ostal.
They are going home.
Van is the form for they.
Common Mistakes
Treating anar as a regular -ar verb.
Ani al mercat.Vau al mercat.Anar is irregular. The I form is vau, not ani.
