Instructions in Notices

Level 5Sounds Like ṇē (sūcanā)

The -णे form never changes for gender, number or person.

How It Works

Signs, rules and forms list duties in short lines. Each line ends with the verb in -णे. (Passengers must carry their tickets.)

The group that must act takes -नी, as in प्रवाशांनी. A short rule may leave the group out: (Vehicles must be parked only in the marked place.)

The -णे form does not change for gender or number, so the same ending serves a man, a woman and a crowd. The things in the line may be of any gender:

The form is written, and it tells the reader what to do without addressing anyone. Do not use it to speak to a person. A friend hears the command form:

Lists of rules look like this: Each line is one instruction, and each ends in -णे.
