Requests and Commands

Level 1Sounds Like basa / basā; ghē / ghyā

A few common verbs are irregular: येणे gives ये and या, देणे gives दे and द्या, घेणे gives घे and घ्या, and पिणे gives पी and प्या.

How It Works

VerbTo a friendTo an elder or stranger
बसणे (sit)बसबसा
घेणे (take)घेघ्या
येणे (come)येया
देणे (give)देद्या
थांबणे (wait)थांबथांबा
जाणे (go)जाजा

Use the -ा form with a teacher, a shopkeeper, an older relative you call तुम्ही and anyone you meet for the first time. Use the bare form with a friend, a sibling, a child and your own parents.

A friendly ending makes the request softer: चल रे to a man and थांब गं to a woman. Add जरा (a little) or call the person by a family word: काका, आत या.
