इतका changes its ending to match the word it describes: इतका, इतकी, इतके.

How It Works

Say what the amount or degree is with इतका, then give the result after की. तो इतका थकला होता की लगेच झोपला. (He was so tired that he fell asleep at once.)

The ending follows the word that is described. A woman who says she laughed a lot uses the feminine: मी इतकी हसले की डोळ्यांत पाणी आले. A man who was afraid says: मी इतका घाबरलो की काही बोलू शकलो नाही.

Before की, the first part is a full statement. After की, the result has its own verb, and it can be in any tense. The result often tells something surprising.

इतके also goes with a count: इतके दिवस मी वाट पाहिली. (I waited for so many days.) Here the word it describes is दिवस, which is masculine plural.

एवढा points at an amount: एवढा मोठा केक. इतका is the usual word when a result with की follows.

    I was so frightened that I could not say a word. A man is speaking.

    इतका is masculine because a man is speaking.

  5. चहा इतका गरम होता की मला तो पिता आला नाही.

    The tea was so hot that I could not drink it.

    इतका agrees with the masculine word चहा.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the same ending for a woman and a man.

    ती इतका हुशार आहे की सगळे तिचे कौतुक करतात.
    ती इतकी हुशार आहे की सगळे तिचे कौतुक करतात.

    इतका changes with the person: ती takes इतकी.

  • Using the Hindi word इतना.

    तो इतना थकला होता की लगेच झोपला.
    तो इतका थकला होता की लगेच झोपला.

    इतना is Hindi. Marathi says इतका, इतकी or इतके.
