असा / तसा
Like This and Like That
असा and तसा change their endings like an adjective: असा, अशी, असे, अशा.
How It Works
असा means "like this" or "such". तसा means "like that". Show the thing, or say it, and the word fits: असा रस्ता मी कधी पाहिला नाही. (I have never seen a road like this.)
| Like this | Like that | |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | असा | तसा |
| Feminine | अशी | तशी |
| Neuter | असे | तसे |
| Before -ला, -त, -वर | अशा | तशा |
With many things the forms are: masculine असे, feminine अशा, neuter अशी (असे लोक, अशा मुली, अशी मुले).
For a person, the ending follows the person. A man says मी असा आहे. A woman says मी तशी नाही. Both words work as the second part of a statement with आहे and नाही.
For the way an action is done, use असे and तसे: असे करा, तसे करू नका. (Do it like this, do not do it like that.)
Before a noun with an ending, both turn into अशा and तशा: अशा वेळी शांत राहा. (Stay calm at such a time.)
असा and तसा also join other words. तसाच means "just like that", and असाच means "just like this": तो असाच आहे. (He is just like this.)
