खूप / थोडा

A Lot and a Little

Level 1Sounds Like khūpa / thōḍā

खूप never changes, and थोडा changes with the noun like चांगला.

How It Works

GenderExample
masculineथोडा चहा
feminineथोडी साखर
neuterथोडे पाणी

खूप goes before an adjective (खूप गरम), before a noun (खूप लोक) and before a verb (ती खूप बोलते).

With a plural noun, थोडा changes like चांगला: थोडे लोक (a few people), थोड्या वह्या (a few notebooks), थोडी पुस्तके (a few books).

थोडे can also stand before a verb, with the meaning a little or for a moment: थोडे थांबा (wait a little). मी थोडे खातो means I eat a little. A man is speaking.

To ask how much, use किती: किती साखर हवी? (How much sugar do you want?)

    आज खूप गरम आहे.

बहुत is Hindi. Marathi says खूप.

  • Using थोडा with a feminine noun.

    मला थोडा साखर पाहिजे.
    मला थोडी साखर पाहिजे.

साखर is feminine, so the word is थोडी.
