अगदी / फार / जरा

Very, Quite and a Bit

Level 3Sounds Like agadī / phāra / jarā

How It Works

All three words usually stand before the word they describe. They never change for gender or number.

WordMeaningExample
अगदीcompletely, exactlyअगदी बरोबर!
फारvery, a lotफार थंडी आहे.
जराa bit, a momentजरा थांबा.

जरा in a request means "please, for a moment": जरा इकडे या. (Please come here.) In a description it means a little: ही भाजी जरा तिखट आहे. (This vegetable is a bit spicy.)

फार with a negative means not very much: फार नाही. (Not much.) The adjective that follows still changes with its noun: फार मोठा, फार मोठी, फार मोठे.

खूप also means very. फार is a little more formal and sits well in writing. अगदी often goes with the word बरोबर (right) and with adjectives that name an extreme, such as अगदी नवीन (brand new).
