The second half names what will follow if the order is not obeyed, usually in the future or the passive.
How It Works
अन्यथा belongs to notices, warnings and formal letters. The first half gives an instruction or condition, and the second half gives the consequence that follows if it is not met.

The first half often uses the -ावे form of advice or an order with -ा. The result uses the future or the passive: रद्द केला जाईल, कारवाई करण्यात येईल.
Everyday speech uses नाहीतर for the same job, and अन्यथा is its written form.
A second meaning of अन्यथा is in another way, usually in a bad sense. You see it in polite phrases: माझ्या बोलण्याचा अन्यथा अर्थ घेऊ नका. (Please do not take my words the wrong way.)
The word stands at the start of its clause. A comma before it keeps the two halves clear. For a plain choice between two things, use किंवा, as अन्यथा does not link options.

Follow the rules. Otherwise, action will be taken.
अन्यथा introduces the consequence in the passive.
- अर्ज वेळेत सादर करावा, अन्यथा तो रद्द केला जाईल.
The application must be submitted on time. Otherwise, it will be cancelled.
The first half uses -ावा for the rule.
- शुल्क आजच भरावे, अन्यथा प्रवेश रद्द होईल.
The fee must be paid today. Otherwise, the admission will be cancelled.
The result half is in the future.
- आपण वेळेवर यावे, अन्यथा कार्यक्रम सुरू होणार नाही.
Please come on time. Otherwise, the programme will not start.
अन्यथा follows a polite request with आपण.
- माझ्या बोलण्याचा अन्यथा अर्थ घेऊ नका.
Please do not take my words the wrong way.

Common Mistakes
Using the Hindi word वरना.
नियमांचे पालन करा, वरना कारवाई होईल.नियमांचे पालन करा, अन्यथा कारवाई होईल.वरना is Hindi. Marathi writes अन्यथा or नाहीतर.
Using अन्यथा as a word for or between two choices.
चहा अन्यथा कॉफी घ्या.चहा किंवा कॉफी घ्या.अन्यथा names a consequence. For two choices, use किंवा.
