तर
Marking a Topic or Contrast
The listener hears “as for me” and expects a contrast or an expression of feeling.
How It Works
तर has two jobs in Marathi. Inside जर … तर it means “then”. After a word it marks a topic, and this entry covers that second use.
| After | Example |
|---|---|
The word before तर is the topic. The rest of the sentence says something about it. Often another topic stands in contrast:
तर can add feeling when there is no contrast. तू तर खूप छान गातेस says “you sing really well!” with warmth.
Write तर as a separate word: मी तर, घरी तर. Do not confuse it with तो (he).
The word fits statements about the speaker too: (We, for our part, go there every day.)

Common Mistakes
Confusing तर with तो.
तो means “he”; the topic word is तर.
Joining तर to the word.
तर is a separate word.
