тогаш кога / онаму каде што
Correlative Clauses
тогаш → кога · таму / онаму → каде што · така → како што · толку → колку што · таков → каков што
How It Works
How it works. A pointing word in the main clause looks ahead, and a relative word opens the clause that explains it. The pairs follow the meaning:
- time: тогаш ... кога — Дојди тогаш кога ќе можеш. (Come whenever you can.)
- place: таму / онаму ... каде што — Остани онаму каде што ти е убаво. (Stay where you feel happy.)
- way: така ... како што — Направи го така како што ти покажав. (Do it the way I showed you.)
- amount: толку ... колку што — Земи толку колку што ти треба. (Take as much as you need.)
- kind: таков ... каков што — Ја сакам таква каква што е. (I love her just as she is.)
The relative words. They are the same ones used after nouns (see каде што; кога во односни реченици and како што). Каде, како, колку and каков take што here, while тогаш is followed by plain кога. Онаму and онака come from the far pointing words (compare оној). In these pairs they work just like таму and така.
Why use it. The pointing word adds weight. Дојди кога ќе можеш is neutral, while Дојди тогаш кога ќе можеш stresses that the time is up to you. The pair can also open the sentence to underline a contrast: Тогаш кога најмногу ми требаше, го немаше. (Just when I needed him most, he was not there.) Formal texts use the same pattern: Постапете онака како што е наведено. (Proceed as stated.) For people and things, the same idea is expressed with тоа што; оној што.
Tense. A кога clause about the future takes ќе, as in кога ќе: тогаш кога ќе можеш.
