Adjective Agreement
An adjective changes its ending to match its noun: нов град, нова куќа, ново село, нови книги.
How It Works
Four forms.
- Masculine, no ending: нов град (a new city)
- Feminine -а: нова куќа (a new house)
- Neuter -о: ново село (a new village)
- Plural -и: нови градови, нови куќи, нови села
The plural is the same for all three genders.
More examples. голем, голема, големо, големи (big), мал, мала, мало, мали (small), стар, стара, старо, стари (old), македонски, македонска, македонско, македонски (Macedonian). Adjectives in -ски already end in -и in the masculine: македонски град.
A vowel can disappear. Some adjectives lose a vowel when they add an ending: добар → добра, добро, добри. See Adjectives With a Disappearing Vowel.
With the article. The article goes on the adjective, not the noun: новиот град, новата куќа. See The Article on Adjectives.
After сум. The adjective agrees in the same way: Куќата е нова. See Adjectives After Be.
Examples (6)
- Ова е нов телефон.
This is a new phone.
- Живеам во стара куќа.
I live in an old house.
Куќа is feminine, so the adjective ends in -а.
- Тоа е мало село.
That is a small village.
Село is neuter, so the adjective ends in -о.
- Купив нови книги.
I bought new books.
Every plural adjective ends in -и.
- Сакам македонска музика.
I like Macedonian music.
- Ова е добро кафе.
This is good coffee.
Добар loses its а before an ending: добро.
Common Mistakes
Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.
Имаме нов куќа.Имаме нова куќа.Куќа is feminine, so the adjective ends in -а.
Using the feminine form with a neuter noun in -е.
Ова е нова кафе.Ова е ново кафе.Кафе is neuter, so the adjective ends in -о.
Using a singular adjective with a plural noun.
Купив нова книги.Купив нови книги.With a plural noun, the adjective ends in -и.
