Verb Aspect

Level 2Sounds Like glagolski vid: svršen i nesvršen

Macedonian verbs usually come in aspect pairs: imperfective чита (read, be reading) and perfective прочита (read through, finish reading).

How It Works

Two verbs, one meaning. An aspect pair shares a basic meaning but views the action differently: чита / прочита (read), пишува / напише (write), купува / купи (buy), доаѓа / дојде (come). Pairs are built with a prefix (чита → прочита), with a suffix (купи → купува) or from different stems (доаѓа / дојде).

Imperfective. The action is in progress, repeated or a general fact. Only an imperfective verb can describe what is happening now: Сега пишувам писмо, Секоја сабота купувам овошје.

Perfective. The action is one whole event, usually with a result or an end point: Го напишав писмото (I wrote the letter, and it is done). A perfective present cannot stand alone. It needs a word such as да, ќе or ако in front: Сакам да го напишам писмото. See perfective verbs after да, ќе and ако.

In the past. The aorist normally uses the perfective partner (купив), and the imperfect normally uses the imperfective one (купував).

Tip. Learn new verbs in pairs: купува – купи, учи – научи, прави – направи.

Examples (6)

  1. Сега читам книга.

I am reading a book now.

The action is in progress, so чита is used.

  2. Вчера ја прочитав книгата.

    Yesterday I read the book.

Прочита presents the reading as finished: the whole book.

  3. Секоја сабота купувам леб на пазар.

Every Saturday I buy bread at the market.

A repeated action takes the imperfective купува.

  4. Сакам да купам леб.

I want to buy some bread.

After да, the perfective купам names one complete purchase.

  5. Таа пишува роман.

    She is writing a novel.

The novel is not finished yet.

  6. Таа напиша роман.

    She wrote a novel.

The perfective напише presents the novel as finished.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a perfective verb for something happening now.

    Сега прочитам книга.
    Сега читам книга.

A perfective present cannot describe the present moment. Use the imperfective partner.

  • Using a perfective aorist for a repeated past habit.

    Секој ден купив леб.
    Секој ден купував леб.

A habit is repeated, so it needs the imperfective купува in the imperfect, not the perfective aorist.
