кој / што / каде / кога / како / зошто / колку

The seven question words.

• кој – who: Кој е тоа? (Who is that?)
• што – what: Што е ова? (What is this?)
• каде – where: Каде е тоалетот? (Where is the toilet?)
• кога – when: Кога почнува филмот? (When does the film start?)
• како – how: Како си? (How are you?)
• зошто – why: Зошто учиш македонски? (Why are you learning Macedonian?)
• колку – how much, how many: Колку чини ова? (How much does this cost?)

Word order. Put the question word first. A noun subject often comes after the verb: Каде живее Марко? (Where does Marko live?)

Who or what. Кој asks about people and што about things: Кој е тоа? asks who a person is, while Што е тоа? asks what a thing is.

Useful phrases. Од каде си? (Where are you from?) uses каде with од: see Saying Where You Are From. For prices, see Asking Prices.

Кој changes its form. With a noun it agrees: Која книга? See Asking Which One. As an object it becomes кого: see Whom and To Whom.

If you know Serbian or Bulgarian, note the Macedonian forms што (not шта or какво) and зошто (not зашто or защо).
