Relative каде што / кога

Relative Place and Time

Level 4Sounds Like kade što; koga vo odnosni rečenici

Каде што = where: Градот каде што живеам е мал. (The town where I live is small.) Кога = when: Го памтам денот кога се запознавме. (I remember the day when we met.)

How It Works

Places: каде што.

  • Градот каде што живеам е мал. (The town where I live is small.)
  • Ова е кафулето каде што се запознавме. (This is the café where we met.)
  • Тие дојдоа во Охрид, каде што останаа цело лето. (They came to Ohrid, where they stayed all summer.)

Каде што is written as two words, unlike којшто and чијшто. You may also hear plain каде: градот каде живеам. An agreeing form of кој after a preposition works too: градот во кој живеам.

Times: кога.

  • Го памтам денот кога се запознавме. (I remember the day when we met.)
  • Тоа беше годината кога се родив. (That was the year when I was born.)
  • Ќе дојде ден кога ќе се сретнеме пак. (A day will come when we will meet again.)

For a future time, add ќе after кога, as in кога ќе.

Not just што. In casual speech you may hear што alone for a place, as in градот што живеам. In careful speech and writing, use каде што or a preposition with кој.

With a pointing word. The main clause can prepare the place or time with таму, онаму or тогаш: Остани онаму каде што ти е убаво. (Stay where you feel good.) See тогаш кога and онаму каде што. Without a noun, каде што also starts a clause of place: Седни каде што сакаш. (Sit where you like.)

Relative or question? After verbs like знае or праша, каде and кога start an indirect question and take no што: Не знам каде живее. See questions inside a sentence.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong form of кој after a preposition.

Куќата во кој живеам е стара.
Куќата во која живеам е стара.

Кој agrees with the place noun. Куќа is feminine, so the form is која. You can also say куќата каде што живеам.

  • Writing каде што as one word.

    Градот кадешто живеам е мал.
Градот каде што живеам е мал.

Што is written together only with кој and чиј (којшто, чијшто). After каде it is a separate word.
