Short Object Pronouns

Level 2Sounds Like kratki zamenki: me; te; go; ǰa; nè; ve; gi

Macedonian uses short pronouns for "me, you, him, her, it, us, them" as objects and puts them before the verb: Те сакам (I love you), Ги купив (I bought them).

How It Works

Forms.
ме – me
те – you (one person)
го – him; it (masculine or neuter noun)
ја – her; it (feminine noun)
нѐ – us
ве – you (several people, or polite)
ги – them

Place. The short pronoun comes right before the verb, even at the start of a sentence: Го видов вчера. Не and ќе come before it: Не те слушам, Ќе го купам. The main exception is a command, where the pronoun follows the verb: Земи го! See short pronouns after a command.

Gender. Choose by the grammatical gender of the noun: Го читам весникот (masculine), Ја читам книгата (feminine), Го јадам јаболкото (neuter). Plural things take ги: Ги купив чевлите.

Doubling. When the object noun is definite, because it has an article or is a name, the short pronoun appears together with the noun: Ја видов Ана, Го читам весникот. See doubling a definite object.

Full forms. After prepositions and for emphasis, use the full pronouns мене, тебе, него, неа, нас, вас, нив. See full pronouns.

Examples (6)

  1. Те сакам.

    I love you.

    Word by Word: You love-I.

    Те comes before the verb.

  2. Го видов вчера во градот.

I saw him in town yesterday.

A short pronoun can open the sentence.

  3. Ја читам книгата.

    I am reading the book.

    Word by Word: It-FEM read-I the-book.

Книгата is feminine and definite, so ја doubles it.

  4. Нѐ чекаат пред киното.

They are waiting for us in front of the cinema.

Нѐ with the grave accent means us.

  5. Ги купив чевлите.

    I bought the shoes.

Ги stands for a plural object.

  6. Ве молам, седнете.

    Please sit down.

Word by Word: You ask-I, sit-down.

Ве молам literally means "I ask you".

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the short pronoun after an ordinary verb.

    Видов го вчера.
    Го видов вчера.

Outside commands, the short pronoun goes before the verb, even at the start of a sentence.

  • Writing не for "us".

    Тие не чекаат пред киното.
    Тие нѐ чекаат пред киното.

To mean "They are waiting for us", write нѐ with the grave accent. Не means not, so the incorrect sentence says "They are not waiting in front of the cinema".

  • Choosing го for a feminine noun.

    Го читам книгата.
    Ја читам книгата.

Книга is feminine, so the pronoun is ја.
