ова е / тоа е

Introducing Things

Level 1Sounds Like ova e; toa e

Use ова е for this is and тоа е for that is: Ова е мојот брат. Тоа е добро.

How It Works

Near or far. Ова points to something near you. Тоа points to something farther away, or to something already said:

  • Ова е мојот брат. (This is my brother.)
  • Тоа е мојата кола. (That is my car.)
  • Тоа е добро. (That is good.)

One form for every noun. When you introduce something, ова and тоа do not change: Ова е мојата сестра. Ова е моето дете.

Plural. Change е to се: Ова се моите пријатели. (These are my friends.) Тоа се нашите деца. (Those are our children.) See Present Forms of Be.

Asking. Што е ова? (What is this?) Кој е тоа? (Who is that?)

Before a noun. To say this city or that house, use the forms that agree with the noun: овој град, оваа куќа. See This and That.

Examples (6)

  1. Ова е мојот брат.

    This is my brother.

  2. Ова е мојата сестра.

    This is my sister.

Ова stays the same with a feminine noun.

  3. Тоа е добро.

    That is good.

Тоа refers to something already said.

  4. Што е ова?

    What is this?

  5. Ова се моите пријатели.

    These are my friends.

With a plural noun, е becomes се.

  6. Кој е тоа?

    Who is that?

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping е with a plural noun.

    Ова е моите пријатели.
    Ова се моите пријатели.

The verb agrees with the plural noun, so е becomes се.

  • Leaving out е.

    Ова мојот брат.
    Ова е мојот брат.

Macedonian needs the verb е here, just as English needs is.
