кога ќе

Future Time Clauses

Level 3Sounds Like koga ḱe

To say “when” about the future, use кога ќе: Кога ќе дојдеш, ќе јадеме (When you come, we will eat).

How It Works

The rule. A clause with кога that points to the future takes ќе and a present verb: Кога ќе дојдеш, ќе јадеме. English uses a plain present here (“when you come”), which is why learners often leave ќе out.

Why. Verbs like дојде, стигне, заврши are perfective. A perfective present cannot stand after кога on its own; it needs ќе, just as described in perfective verbs after да, ќе and ако.

The main clause. The other half usually uses the future with ќе or a command: Кога ќе стигнеш, јави ми се.

Штом and откако. The same pattern works with штом (as soon as) and откако (after): Штом ќе заврши часот, одиме на кафе, Откако ќе ја прочиташ книгата, дај ми ја.

Word order. Ќе comes right after кога, and short pronouns follow ќе: Кога ќе ми се јавиш. See the order before the verb.

Examples (6)

  1. Кога ќе дојдеш, ќе јадеме.

When you come, we will eat.

Word by Word: When will come-you, will eat-we.

Ќе follows кога because the event is in the future.

  2. Кога ќе стигнеш, јави ми се.

    When you arrive, call me.

The main clause is a command.

  3. Кога ќе пораснам, ќе бидам лекар.

When I grow up, I will be a doctor.

    Both halves use ќе.

  4. Штом ќе заврши часот, одиме на кафе.

As soon as the class ends, we are going for coffee.

Штом takes ќе in the same way.

  5. Откако ќе ја прочиташ книгата, дај ми ја.

After you read the book, give it to me.

Откако ќе is followed by a short pronoun and the verb.

  6. Што ќе правиш кога ќе завршиш факултет?

What will you do when you finish university?

The кога ќе clause can come second.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out ќе, as in English.

    Кога дојдеш, ќе јадеме.
    Кога ќе дојдеш, ќе јадеме.

A future event after кога needs ќе. Without it, the perfective verb дојдеш cannot stand there.

  • Putting a short pronoun before ќе.

Кога ми ќе се јавиш, ќе излеземе.
Кога ќе ми се јавиш, ќе излеземе.

Ќе always opens the verb group. Short pronouns come after it and right before the verb.
