-თ (You All as the Object)
You All as the Object
-თ at the end of a verb also marks a plural or polite you as the object.
How It Works
You know გ- for you as the object: გხედავ (I see you). To make that you plural, or polite to one person, add -თ:
| To one friend | To several, or polite | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| გხედავ | გხედავთ | I see you |
| გიცნობ | გიცნობთ | I know you |
| გთხოვ | გთხოვთ | I ask you, please |
| გისმენ | გისმენთ | I'm listening to you |
This is why you hear -თ in polite set phrases: გთხოვთ (please), გმადლობთ (thank you), and გისმენთ, the polite way to answer the phone.
The same -თ is also the ending for we: ვხედავთ (we see). So გხედავთ can mean I see you all, or we see you. The situation tells you which one is meant.
