თქვენ (Polite You)
Polite You
Use თქვენ with a plural verb to speak politely to one person.
How It Works
| Friendly (შენ) | Polite (თქვენ) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| შენ საიდან ხარ? | თქვენ საიდან ხართ? | Where are you from? |
| როგორ ხარ? | როგორ ხართ? | How are you? |
| ყავა გინდა? | ყავა გინდათ? | Would you like coffee? |
| მადლობა! | გმადლობთ! | Thank you! |
The polite form adds -თ to the verb, the same ending as the plural. So ხართ means you are, to several people or politely to one.
Polite address often goes with ბატონო or ქალბატონო and the person's first name: ბატონო გიორგი, როგორ ხართ? (How are you, Mr. Giorgi?)
If you are not sure, start with თქვენ. A Georgian friend will tell you when to switch to შენ.
