-ელი (Person From a Place)
People from a Place
Add -ელი to a place name for a person from there.
How It Works
To name a person from a place, add -ელი to the place name. A final -ი drops first:
| Place | Person from there |
|---|---|
| თბილისი | თბილისელი |
| ქუთაისი | ქუთაისელი |
| კახეთი | კახელი |
| იმერეთი | იმერელი |
| სოფელი (village) | სოფლელი |
| ინგლისი | ინგლისელი |
Regions ending in -ეთი drop the -ეთ- too: კახეთი becomes კახელი.
The words work as nouns and as adjectives: ის თბილისელია (she's from Tbilisi), თბილისელი გოგო (a girl from Tbilisi). They take the plural and cases like any noun: სოფლელები (villagers).
A Georgian person is ქართველი. A few places have a different word, so learn those as you meet them.
