-ა (Short for არის)
Short Is
After a word that ends in a vowel, არის can shrink to -ა: ეს წიგნია.
How It Works
| Full form | Short form |
|---|---|
| ეს წიგნი არის. | ეს წიგნია. (This is a book.) |
| ყავა ცხელი არის. | ყავა ცხელია. (The coffee is hot.) |
| ნინო სახლში არის. | ნინო სახლშია. (Nino is at home.) |
| ეს ძვირი არ არის. | ეს ძვირი არაა. (This isn't expensive.) |
The word adds -ა and changes nothing else. A word that ends in -ა gets a second one: ეს ყავაა (this is coffee), ეს ჩემი დაა (this is my sister).
The short form is the everyday way to say is, in speech, in messages and in stories. The full არის is never wrong, and you keep it when you want to stress it.
After a consonant, the short form is -აა: სად არის? becomes სადაა? (where is it?)
The short -ა only replaces არის. I am and you are stay ვარ and ხარ, and they are stays არიან.
