-ური/-ული
Country and Language Words
-ური or -ული turn a country or people into an adjective or a language name.
How It Works
-ური and -ული make adjectives from countries and peoples. The same word also names the language:
| -ური | -ული |
|---|---|
| ინგლისური (English) | ქართული (Georgian) |
| იტალიური (Italian) | ფრანგული (French) |
| ესპანური (Spanish) | გერმანული (German) |
| იაპონური (Japanese) | ამერიკული (American) |
A pattern helps you choose: when the word already has a რ, it usually takes -ული (ქართული (kartuli), ფრანგული, გერმანული). Words without რ take -ური. But when a ლ comes after the რ, the word keeps -ური: ბრაზილიური (Brazilian), ავსტრალიური (Australian).
As adjectives they go before the noun and change like other adjectives: იტალიური რესტორანი (an Italian restaurant), გერმანულ ფილმებს (German films, in the dative).
Other words take these endings too: სოფელი (village) gives სოფლური (village-style, homemade).
To say in a language, add -ად: ქართულად (in Georgian).
