သော်

When in Older Literary Prose

Level 6

Modern writing says သောအခါ for "when" and လျှင် for "if", so use သော် only to read older books.

How It Works

သော် is an old way to say "when", or "if" with အကယ်၍ in front. You meet it in classic stories, old chronicles, poems and older translations.

Older proseModern writingSpeech

With အကယ်၍ in front, the clause is a condition: "if". On its own, it marks a time: "when".

Old stories link event after event with သော်: when the king heard this, when night fell, when he reached the village. Each step ends with လေ၏, the classic story ending.

Today, a newspaper, a letter or a notice says သောအခါ. A notice that says ရောက်သော် ဖုန်းဆက်ပါ sounds old-fashioned, the way "when thou arrivest" sounds in English.

The old word lives on inside two modern words you already read. သို့သော် (however) is သို့ plus သော်. Both are everyday written words, though သော် alone is old.

The subject of a သော် clause often has no marker, as in မင်းကြီး ထိုစကားကို ကြားသော် (when the king heard those words).

Examples (5)

When dawn came, they went on with their journey.

သော် after လင်း (to grow light) means "when".

When the king heard those words, he was overjoyed.

An old story links events with သော်.

When he reached the village, the villagers welcomed him.

The time clause with သော် comes first.

When night fell, the villagers gathered around the fire.

သော် with the classic ending လေ၏.

If you ask a wise person, you will get an answer.

    With အကယ်၍, သော် means "if".

Common Mistakes

  • Using bare သော် for "when" in modern writing.

Modern notices and letters say
