လျှင်
If in Writing
Speech says ရင် in the same place, so a sentence changes style by swapping one word.
How It Works
လျှင် means "if" in writing. It follows a bare verb, and the result comes after it: ငွေရှိလျှင် ဝယ်မည်။ (If we have the money, we will buy it.)
| Speech | Writing |
|---|---|
| ငွေရှိရင် ဝယ်မယ်။ | ငွေရှိလျှင် ဝယ်မည်။ |
| မလာရင် | မလာလျှင် |
The result clause decides the time. With မည် it is a future result. With တတ်သည် it is something that usually happens: မိုးရွာလျှင် ရထားများ နောက်ကျတတ်သည်။ (When it rains, trains tend to run late.)
A written instruction can end in ပါ: အချိန်ရှိလျှင် ဖတ်ကြည့်ပါ။ (If you have time, take a look.) Notices and news also use ပါက for "if". It is more formal, and both appear in print.
Watch the word သူ before a negative. In writing, သူမ means "she", so သူမလာလျှင် can be read as "if she comes". Write a name or another clear subject before မလာလျှင်.
Keep the whole sentence written. ရင် and spoken endings such as မယ် do not mix with လျှင်.
The condition always comes first, and the result always comes second.

Common Mistakes
Writing သူမလာလျှင် for "if he does not come".
သူမလာလျှင် စတင်မည်။ကိုဇော်ဇော် မလာလျှင် စတင်မည်။In writing, သူမ reads as "she". Use a name or a clear subject before မလာလျှင်.
Using spoken ရင် with a written ending.
ငွေရှိရင် ဝယ်မည်။ငွေရှိလျှင် ဝယ်မည်။ဝယ်မည် is written, so the condition takes the written လျှင်.
