သောအခါ
When in Writing
In speech the same idea is တဲ့အခါ, so the two forms carry one meaning in two styles.
How It Works
သောအခါ is the written word for "when". It sits right after a bare verb, and the main clause comes after it: မိုးရွာသောအခါ လမ်းများတွင် ရေဝပ်သည်။ (When it rains, the roads flood.)

The time clause never takes သည် or တယ် before သောအခါ. The verb stays bare, and the whole sentence has one ending at the very end.
You will also see သောအခါတွင်, with တွင် added, which sounds a little more formal, and သည့်အခါ, built from the other written describing word သည့်. All three mean "when". Newspapers, school books, stories and letters use both.
Older books use bare သော် for "when". That form now sounds old-fashioned, so keep it for reading literature. Modern prose writes သောအခါ.
Keep every word in the sentence written. Spoken words such as တဲ့, မှာ, တွေ or ဒီ do not belong in a sentence that uses သောအခါ. Use their written partners: သော, တွင်, များ and ဤ.
Read the time clause as a whole: everything before သောအခါ tells you when.

The bare verb အိပ်ပျော်သွား comes right before သောအခါ.
- နေဝင်သောအခါ ဈေးသည်များ ဆိုင်သိမ်းကြသည်။
When the sun goes down, the stallholders pack up their stalls.
နေဝင်သောအခါ gives the time of the main action.
- ပုဂံသို့ ပထမဆုံးအကြိမ် ရောက်သောအခါ ဘုရားများ၏ အလှကို အံ့ဩမိသည်။
When I first came to Bagan, I was amazed by the beauty of the pagodas.
The writer drops "I", and သောအခါ still links the two clauses.
- အစည်းအဝေး စတင်သောအခါတွင် ဥက္ကဋ္ဌသည် နှုတ်ခွန်းဆက်စကား ပြောကြားသည်။
When the meeting began, the chair gave a welcome speech.
သောအခါတွင် is the slightly more formal form with တွင်.
Common Mistakes
Using the spoken တဲ့အခါ inside a written sentence.
မိုးရွာတဲ့အခါ လမ်းများတွင် ရေဝပ်သည်။မိုးရွာသောအခါ လမ်းများတွင် ရေဝပ်သည်။A sentence that ends in သည် keeps every part written, so "when" is သောအခါ.
Writing bare သော် for "when" in modern prose.
ရန်ကုန်သို့ ရောက်သော် ဖုန်းဆက်သည်။ရန်ကုန်သို့ ရောက်သောအခါ ဖုန်းဆက်သည်။Bare သော် belongs to older literature. Today's writing says သောအခါ.
