Possession in Writing

Level 4

Pronouns take ၏ in writing too: သူ၏ အိမ် (his house), ကျွန်ုပ်တို့၏ ကျောင်း (our school).

How It Works

Writing joins an owner and the thing it owns with ၏, in the place where speech says ရဲ့. The owner comes first.

SpokenWrittenEnglish
ဆရာရဲ့ စကားဆရာ၏ စကားthe teacher's words

၏ is a single letter, said i. It links any owner to what follows: a person, a city, a company or a country.

Short forms such as သူ့ appear in writing as well. News and careful prose use the full word with

Names that work as one word need no (Burmese writing).

A phrase with ၏ goes with other written words, in a sentence that ends in သည် or မည်. Never put ရဲ့ in a written sentence, or ၏ in a spoken one.

At the end of a sentence in old literature, ၏ has a different job, which the entry on သတည်း / လေ၏ explains.
