သတည်း / လေ၏

Classical Sentence Endings

Level 6

Modern writing ends the same sentences with သည် or ခဲ့သည်.

How It Works

Classical prose has its own sentence endings. The two you will meet most are လေ၏ and သတည်း.

EndingJobModern writingSpeech
လေ၏tells an event in a taleခဲ့သည်ခဲ့တယ်
သတည်းcloses a statement with weightသည်တယ်

လေ၏ is the voice of a storyteller. Old tales begin with ရှေးသရောအခါက … ရှိလေ၏ (long, long ago, there was …), and each step of the story ends the same way. It adds a feeling of "and so".

သတည်း comes at the end of a passage, a lesson or a definition. It says "this is so" with weight, like a final word: ဤသည်ကား ပညာရှိတို့၏ အဆုံးအမ ဖြစ်သတည်း (this is the teaching of the wise).

In old prose, ၏ alone can also end a sentence, where modern writing says သည်. It is the same ၏ that means "of" between nouns; at the end of a sentence it is an ending.

Read these in classic stories, chronicles and religious texts. Modern news, letters and essays use သည် and ခဲ့သည်.
