After an event noun, ပြီးနောက် reads as "after the event ended": အစည်းအဝေး ပြီးနောက်.
How It Works
ပြီးနောက် means "after" in writing. It is made of ပြီး (finish) and နောက် (after), so it reads as "after finishing": ထမင်းစားပြီးနောက် သတင်းစာ ဖတ်သည်။ (After eating, he reads the newspaper.)
It works after two kinds of words.
- After a verb: ဘွဲ့ရပြီးနောက် (after graduating), မိုးတိတ်ပြီးနောက် (after the rain stopped).
- After an event noun, where ပြီး means the event ended: အစည်းအဝေး ပြီးနောက် (after the meeting).

Writing uses ပြီးနောက် for the past and the future alike. The ending at the close of the sentence shows the time.
To start a new sentence with "after that", writing uses ထို့နောက်: ထို့နောက် အိမ်သို့ ပြန်သည်။ (After that, she went home.)
Keep the whole sentence written. ပြီးရင် and spoken endings do not belong next to ပြီးနောက်.
The first action always comes before ပြီးနောက်, and the later action comes after it, so the sentence follows the order of events. This makes long written sentences easy to follow: read the part before ပြီးနောက် first, then the part after it.

ပြီးနောက် follows the verb ဘွဲ့ရ (get a degree).
- မိုးတိတ်ပြီးနောက် ကလေးများ အပြင်သို့ ထွက်ကစားကြသည်။
After the rain stopped, the children went out to play.
မိုးတိတ်ပြီးနောက် says what had to finish first.
- ခရီးသွားများ ပုဂံမြို့ကို လှည့်လည်ကြည့်ရှုပြီးနောက် ညနေတွင် မန္တလေးသို့ ပြန်ကြသည်။
After touring Bagan, the travelers returned to Mandalay in the evening.
A longer action also takes ပြီးနောက် right after its verb.
Common Mistakes
Using the spoken ပြီးရင် in a written sentence.
ထမင်းစားပြီးရင် သတင်းစာ ဖတ်သည်။ထမင်းစားပြီးနောက် သတင်းစာ ဖတ်သည်။ဖတ်သည် is written, so "after" is ပြီးနောက်.
