လျက် suits a held state, such as eyes closed or tears in your eyes.

How It Works

ကာ and လျက် join two things that happen at the same time. The first verb describes the second: ပြုံးကာ နှုတ်ဆက်သည်။ (She greeted us with a smile.)

ကာ fits an action that runs alongside the main one, such as singing while walking or drinking tea while reading. It is common in stories and news. ကာ also joins two actions in a row, the way ၍ does: ထိုင်ခုံမှ ထကာ အပြင်သို့ ထွက်သွားသည် (he got up from the chair and went out).

လျက် fits a state someone holds while doing the main action: မျက်စိမှိတ်လျက် ထိုင်နေသည် (he sits with his eyes closed), မျက်ရည်ဝဲလျက် (with tears in her eyes). It sounds a little more formal than ကာ.

The main verb carries the ending and the time. The first verb stays bare.

Do not confuse this လျက် with လျက်ရှိသည်. With ရှိ added, လျက်ရှိသည် ends a sentence and means an action is still going on, as in news reports: ရှာဖွေလျက်ရှိသည် (the search is going on).

Both forms belong to writing. In a spoken sentence with တယ်, use ရင်း.

  1. ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် ပြုံးကာ နှုတ်ဆက်သည်။

    Daw Khin Khin greeted us with a smile.

    ပြုံးကာ tells how she greeted us.

  2. ကလေးများ သီချင်းဆိုကာ ကျောင်းသို့ လျှောက်သွားကြသည်။

    The children walked to school singing.

    Singing runs alongside the walking, so the verb takes ကာ.

  3. ဦးအောင်ကျော်သည် လက်ဖက်ရည်သောက်ကာ သတင်းစာ ဖတ်နေသည်။

    U Aung Kyaw is reading the newspaper while drinking tea.

    ကာ joins the tea drinking to the main action, reading.

  4. ဆုရသူသည် မျက်ရည်ဝဲလျက် ကျေးဇူးတင်စကား ပြောကြားသည်။

    With tears in her eyes, the winner gave her thanks.

    မျက်ရည်ဝဲလျက် describes a state she held while speaking.

  5. အဘိုးအိုသည် ထိုင်ခုံပေါ်တွင် မျက်စိမှိတ်လျက် ထိုင်နေသည်။

    The old man is sitting on the chair with his eyes closed.

    လျက် suits a held state such as closed eyes.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the spoken ရင်း in a written sentence.

    ပြုံးရင်း နှုတ်ဆက်သည်။
    ပြုံးကာ နှုတ်ဆက်သည်။

    နှုတ်ဆက်သည် is written, so "while" is ကာ or လျက်.
