News adds ဖြစ်သည် after it for an announced plan: ကျင်းပမည် ဖြစ်သည် (it will be held).

How It Works

Writing marks the future with မည် in the place where speech says မယ်. It is said myi, and it goes right after the verb, at the end of the sentence.

မည် covers plans, forecasts, rules and promises. With ရ it means "must". With ပါ it makes a polite promise in a letter or notice.

News reports add ဖြစ်သည် to an announced plan: ကျင်းပမည် ဖြစ်သည် (it will be held).

The time words change too. Spoken မနက်ဖြန် is written နက်ဖြန်, and ဒီနေ့ is written ယနေ့. Never mix them: a sentence with မနက်ဖြန် ends in မယ်, and a sentence with နက်ဖြန် ends in မည်.

A written negative drops မည် and ends with ပါ: နက်ဖြန် ရုံး မဖွင့်ပါ (the office will be closed tomorrow). For a firm "will not", news writes မည် မဟုတ်ပါ: တက်ရောက်မည် မဟုတ်ပါ (will not attend).

Before a noun, the future form is မည့်: လာမည့်နှစ် (next year).

  1. ပွဲတော်ကို နက်ဖြန် နံနက်တွင် စတင်မည်။

    The festival will start tomorrow morning.

    မည် marks the future; နက်ဖြန် is the written "tomorrow".

  2. ယနေ့ ညနေ ရန်ကုန်တွင် မိုးရွာမည်။

    It will rain in Yangon this evening.

    A forecast with မည်.

  3. ကျောင်းသစ်ကို လာမည့်လတွင် ဖွင့်လှစ်မည် ဖြစ်သည်။

    The new school will open next month.

    News adds ဖြစ်သည် after မည်.

  4. စာအုပ်များကို တစ်ပတ်အတွင်း ပြန်အပ်ရမည်။

    Books must be returned within a week.

    ရမည် means "must" in writing.

  5. အသေးစိတ်ကို နောက်ပိုင်းတွင် အကြောင်းကြားပါမည်။

    We will let you know the details later.

    ပါမည် is a polite promise in a notice.

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken မနက်ဖြန် with the written future.

    မနက်ဖြန် ပွဲကို စတင်မည်။
    နက်ဖြန် ပွဲကို စတင်မည်။

    A sentence ending in မည် uses the written word နက်ဖြန်.

  • Ending a written sentence with spoken မယ်.

    ပွဲကို နက်ဖြန် စတင်မယ်။
    ပွဲကို နက်ဖြန် စတင်မည်။

    Written words such as နက်ဖြန် go with မည်.
