တွေ / များ
Plurals in Writing
For a list, writing closes it with တို့: ရန်ကုန်၊ မန္တလေးနှင့် ပုဂံတို့ (Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan).
How It Works
Writing marks a plural with များ after the noun, in the place where speech says တွေ.
| Spoken | Written | English |
|---|---|---|
| ကျောင်းသားတွေ | ကျောင်းသားများ | students |
| ဧည့်သည်တွေ | ဧည့်သည်များ | guests |
| စာအုပ်တွေ | စာအုပ်များ | books |
When many people act, the verb takes ကြ as well: ကျောင်းသားများ ရောက်ရှိလာကြသည် (the students arrived).
Leave များ out when a number already gives the amount: ကျောင်းသား ၃၀ ဦး (thirty students). In writing, ဦး is the classifier for people.
For a list of names, writing closes the list with တို့: ရန်ကုန်၊ မန္တလေးနှင့် ပုဂံတို့ (Yangon, Mandalay and Bagan). Pronouns keep တို့ for the plural: ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ (we), သူတို့ (they).
As a verb, များ means "to be many": ဧည့်သည် များသည် (there are many guests). After a noun, it marks the plural.
News puts များ after almost every noun for a group of people: ဒေသခံများ (local residents), ဧည့်သည်များ (guests). A plural noun takes the other written words as usual: ကျောင်းသားများ၏ စာအုပ်များ (the students' books).
Use များ in a written sentence, ending in သည် or မည်. A spoken sentence uses တွေ.
