ဤ / ထို
This and That in Writing
ထို also points back to something the text already named: ထိုမြို့ (that town, the one just mentioned).
How It Works
Writing says ဤ for "this" and ထို for "that". Each goes right before the noun, just like spoken ဒီ and အဲဒီ.
| Spoken | Written | English |
|---|---|---|
| ဒီစာအုပ် | ဤစာအုပ် | this book |
| အဲဒီနေ့ | ထိုနေ့ | that day |
| ဒီနှစ် | ဤနှစ် | this year |
| အဲဒီမြို့ | ထိုမြို့ | that town |
ဤ is a single letter, said i. Speech has a third word, ဟို, for something far away; writing uses ထို for that too.
Both join straight onto the noun, with no space. A number and classifier come after the noun: ဤစာအုပ် နှစ်အုပ် (these two books).
ထို also points back to something the text already named: ထိုမြို့ means "that town", the one in the last sentence. News uses ယင်း and ၎င်း the same way, for "the said" or "it".
Written "this year" and "this month" take ဤ or ယခု: ဤနှစ် or ယခုနှစ်. "Today" is ယနေ့.
For "like this" and "like that", writing says ဤသို့ and ထိုသို့. Keep ဤ and ထို in written sentences, ending in သည် or မည်.
