သမျှ
Everything That
Two of them are set phrases you will hear daily: သိသမျှ (everything I know) and တတ်နိုင်သမျှ (as much as I can).
How It Works
သမျှ means "all that". It follows a bare verb and gathers up everything the verb covers: သိသမျှ ပြောပြမယ်။ (I'll tell you everything I know.)
| Phrase | Meaning |
|---|---|
| သိသမျှ | everything I know |
| စားချင်သမျှ | as much as you like to eat |
| တတ်နိုင်သမျှ | as much as I can |
| ရှိသမျှ | all there is |
The phrase works in two ways.
- On its own, as the object: ပြောသမျှ ယုံလို့ မရဘူး (you can't believe everything he says).
- Before a noun: ရှိသမျှ ပိုက်ဆံ (all the money there is).
The verb before သမျှ stays bare. Do not add တယ် or မယ် to it. The ending of the sentence goes on the main verb at the end.
A phrase with သမျှ often comes with အကုန် (all) for extra weight: ရှိသမျှ အကုန်သုံးလိုက်တယ် (I spent every bit of it).
A similar word, သလောက်, means "as much as" with an amount in mind. သမျှ means the whole of it.
သမျှ also appears in writing with the same meaning, as in တတ်နိုင်သမျှ ကူညီမည် (we will help as much as we can).
